Excerpt from Chapter 5.
They ran some tests, which confirmed he had diabetes; I would have to check his blood-sugar levels every day and also give him an insulin injection once a day and sometimes twice. This treatment would have to start straightaway. I bought the necessary medication, blood strips, and glucometer plus a box of very sharp lancets, which I would have to use to make a hole in Freddie’s ear to take the blood samples.
Freddie had a prominent vein running along the top of each ear and this blood vessel seemed like the easiest place to obtain the blood. If I was in any doubt where the vein was, I would shine a torch through his ear. The only problem was that a cat’s ear is very sensitive, thin, and limp and I couldn’t make a hole in his ear as there wasn’t enough rigidity in the ear for the lancet to break the surface of the skin. I had to resort to placing a small stack of Post-it notes behind his ear to strengthen the surface and then lightly press the lancet against the ear so I could then draw some blood.
