The stones on Machrie Moor on Arran are well worth seeing, however don’t do what I did and believe the Stagecoach website which tells you that the best public bus to catch to visit the site is the 322. It isn’t it’s the 324 which could drop you off right outside the car park entrance. I’m not really complaining as the walk along the roads was wonderful in the sunny weather.

There are few, if any, signs to the stones, only an indicator at the car park entrance. From here it’s a walk of about a mile to the furthest of the stone circles. I say furthest as I reckon there are six stone circles, a single standing stone, and three standing stones. These standing stones are between ten and sixteen feet in height, whereas the stones in the circles are smaller and chunkier – think small boulders.

The main standing stones date from 2000 BC, they are on the sites of previous wooden structures thought to date back to 4500 BC. If you’re coming out of the car park, turn left towards Blackwaterfoot and you’ll soon pass the car park for the King’s Cave.
