Introducing Freddie and Gemma the main characters in the books Diary of a Buddhist Cat and Our Cats in Amsterdam.

===============================

Exhausted by his exercise Freddie found a good place on the settee and fell asleep within seconds. We went to bed at our normal time, but I was woken at 5 a.m. by scratching at the bedroom door. I knew this couldn’t be Gemma as she was very patient as regards being fed, but Freddie was obviously very hungry. All of a sudden a paw appeared under the door and tried to lift the door from underneath. Gradually the paw moved along testing the door until about six inches from the door jamb the attempt at opening the door was successful and Freddie trotted into the room looking very pleased with himself.

I decided to ignore him in the hope that he would get bored and go away. Freddie sat down on the floor and miaowed a few times before jumping on to the bed. He placed his paw on my nose and patted it a few times. When that had no effect he rubbed his paw on my moustache and miaowed in my ear quite loudly. Not surprisingly this had an effect. I picked up Freddie, placed him outside the bedroom, and put a chair against the door. Freddie resorted to yowling and was soon accompanied by Gemma on backing vocals. I decided it was easier to feed the cats rather than ignore them, so I got out of bed and split a can of food between the two of them. There was a couple of minutes of peace before Freddie decided he wanted Gemma’s food again and there was another brief scrap before Freddie was once again swiped by Gemma’s longer front paw. He retreated to the settee and I went back to bed for another hour’s sleep.
