I enjoyed this book, there was a lot of suspense, but I thought it was overlong.

Martin Hearne is a British agent sent to occupied France during World War II. He bears a striking resemblance to a Breton called Bertrand Corlay who appeared at first glance to be an ordinary villager. Hearne / Corlay is supposed to be gathering information on German troop movements and trying to determine their plans for a possible invasion of the UK, in particular southern England. However, it transpires that Corlay had more about him than being a villager. Some of the women in his life begin to suspect that Hearne is not the man they remember – being able to whistle and talking English in his sleep are clues – but they say nothing.

Hearne / Corlay finds himself playing an increasingly dangerous game not fully knowing who is on his side and who isn’t.
