This is the third of the five stories that comprise The Once and Future King.
This book recounts the story of Sir Lancelot and his quests, exploits, and travails.
Lancelot and Guenever are in love but seeing her without being able to express his feelings openly hurts Lancelot so much that he has to spend time away from her. He is tricked into drinking too much and sires Galahad with Elaine of Corbenic, separately slays the gigantic knights Sir Carados and Sir Turquine after more than two hours of combat, kills Sir Meliagrance who had been in love with Guenever too, and also tells King Arthur that Galahad, Percival, and Bors had found the Holy Grail. Galahad and Percival never return to Camelot, but Sir Bors does.
Before his night with Elaine, Lancelot had thought himself a man of God, but after that night he is tormented because he believes himself to have been a swindle. He faces up to his doom.
This book is more like the story I was expecting from the beginning with the knights of the Round Table looking for the Holy Grail and fighting tournaments amongst themselves.
