In my opinion, this is a book that should be re-read every few years. For me, it falls into the same category in this regard as 1984 and Animal Farm, books you re-read to see how you’ve changed since the last time you read it. You complete these books in a different way every time you read them.

I ‘noticed’ certain parts of the story more than the last time I read it, the ‘Tiny Tim’ element in particular and the way Scrooge raised his staff’s salary after his transformation. This benevolence was in Scrooge all the time and it took the right experience to bring it out – there must be a lesson there for us all, not just to change our own attitude to others but to help others bring about required change in the way they are perceived by others.

I watched the Alastair Sim version of Scrooge over the Christmas period and this film adaptation was incredibly faithful to the book.
