I understand that battlefields are not everyone’s idea of a day out, but if you are ever close to Inverness please visit the Culloden battlefield. On April 16th 1746 the Highland army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated by the Duke of Cumberland’s Hanoverian army in just under an hour of vicious fighting.
The three reasons to visit are the battle immersion theatre where visitors are placed in the centre of the battle, an overview of the troop movements on the day played out on horizontal screens allowing the viewer to look down on the way the soldiers on both sides moved during the battle, and the handheld devices which provide information automatically to the visitor when they reach certain parts of the battleground. These devices use GPS to ensure that the correct information is provided to the visitor at all times.
Everything is clearly defined and has its place. I really felt when I walked over the moor that I was walking over places where people died during the battle and that’s a testament to the quality of the information provided.
