Where is the bird flying to? It knows where it’s going without needing to consult a piece of wood stuck in the ground. And it will get to where it’s going when it arrives. What a pity humans have lost this philosophy, at least for most of their lives. Time is the fourth dimension and controls us and restricts us more than other three combined. If you could fly like the bird, where would you go? I would be cautious and fly for five minutes to each of the cardinal points and then fly back again, noting how to get back home from each direction. For that I would need a compass, something the bird doesn’t need as its brain is in tune with the earth’s magnetic field. I would extend my daily flights to ten minutes, twenty minutes, an hour, before choosing one of the cardinal points and flying for a day in that direction. That would be the beginning of a great adventure. I would fly back home and write about how flying gives me a different perspective on familiar landscapes and contrast that experience with walking and cycling through that same landscape. That would be the biggest gift of flying – seeing the world in a different way from up above and appreciating there’s always a different view of familiar experiences.
