Autumn Travel – Day 4 Leicester

Playing at home, my football team Leicester City were THRASHED by Oxford United 4 – 0. This is a bad result.

On the other hand, the weather was lovely today and it was a good to visit two parks in the city, Abbey Park and Victoria Park.

As the name suggests, Abbey Park contains the ruins of Leicester Abbey where Cardinal Wolsey died in 1530. Thomas Wolsey died under arrest for high treason after failing to secure an annulment for King Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

Victoria Park (pictured) is the location of the cenotaph designed by Edwin Luytens commemorating the 9,380 dead soldiers from Leicester and Leicestershire who fought in WWI. The dates on the cenotaph are 1914 – 1919 indicating at least some of these men were involved in the fighting in Russia after the armistice of 11th November 1918.
