Travel Writing and Book Reviews

When you go for a walk in Freiberg / Fribourg, be prepared to walk up and down a lot of steps and staircases. There are many bridges and covered walkways between defensive towers to explore too, for example the narrow entrance to the Pont du Gatteron near the St Beat chapel. There is a covered walkway up past the Tour des Chats that joins another walkway that heads down to the Tour de Berne.

There’s also a good walk up to the Loreto Chapel from the Lower Town which provides beautiful views over the city (go in the morning). There’s then a few staircases to the Upper Town in various places. I also saw some funicular tracks but it didn’t seem to be working – my knees creaked when I realised this.
