Autumn Travel – Day 16 – Solothurn

Solothurn is said to be the most beautiful Baroque city in Switzerland with a number of Italianate buildings.

In the sunshine, the visitor can see why as the streets in the old town are beautifully preserved from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially St Ursula’s cathedral (pictured) and the Rathaus. The original defensive towers such as the Baseltour and Bieltour look squat and powerful. There are many colourful fountains in the old town. This is a great place to wander around. There’s a lovely small Middle Eastern restaurant called Pittaria on Theatergasse and a wonderful bar called Solheure where you can have a drink overlooking the quietly flowing River Aare.

Visitors should spend at least one night here.
