Today, I caught the train from Zurich to St Gallen a journey of around seventy minutes. The train was ten minutes late due to infrastructure problems but we arrived only four minutes late.
St Gallen seems a very quiet city with a circular old town that’s centred around the cathedral and the former monastery of St Gallus, an associate of St Columba, the man who founded the monastery of Iona on the west coast of Scotland.
St Gallen has many trolley buses and a few trams that are well used. In the old town, there are many oriels, a type of bay window that can be found on any floor of a building above the ground floor. There are over one hundred of these features and I would hazard a guess that families tried to outdo in each other in terms of the size and ornateness of their oriels.
