Travel Writing and Book Reviews

Today was a lovely sunny day here in Lucerne, a good day to walk around this compact town. First, I admired the defensive towers in the old walls and then visited the Lion of Lucerne and the Glacier Garden. Next was the Hofkirche and the Pavilion where many people were playing petanque / boules.

The old bridges across the river were popular and justifiably so as they are beautifully painted and preserved. The water tower – not the castle as some tourists from a certain country called it – is clean and well-maintained and stands proud in front of the Kapellebrucke with the old town behind.

The art galleries in Lucerne are also superb. The Sammlung Rosengart has a LOT of works by Picasso, at least two hundred I would say, plus around one hundred Paul Klee works in the basement. On the top floor are many masterpieces by painters such as Kandinsky and Marc Chagall. The Kunstmuseum at the KKL displays exhibitions by painters who are still producing pieces – when you think that art has been exhausted you should come here to see that the boundaries are still being moved.
