Travel Writing and Book Reviews

I saw a demonstration today in Bregenz where people were calling for a school strike as the Austrian government has introduced a ban on headscarves for girls under 14 years of age in both public and private schools in the country.

Earlier, I’d tried to find some of the tourist sights using a map from the hotel with only a few of the roads named. This proved difficult. The main problem was that the places of interest were signposted from a major road, but rarely indicated after that, certainly not at each road intersection. However, I did find most of them, largely by listening out for the bells from their belfries whenever the hour or half-hour was due to be indicated.

The loveliest part of Bregenz is the Oberstadt or Upper Town, with Martinsturm or Martin’s Tower as the main sight. As the name indicates, this is in the highest point of the town and is easy to see from certain vantage points, but not others. Again, the signage could have been better, but it is a lovely place with many old buildings, half-timbered houses, and window boxes full of flowering plants.
