It’s back to Switzerland, namely Lucerne, via Zurich today. I have really enjoyed my time around The Bodensee in the last six days, especially Lindau, which is top of my list at the moment of all the places I’ve been to. It’s back to the Swiss Franc too, I must put away my Euros until I reach Italy.
Lucerne is one of the few places in the country that I’ve visited before when I went inter-railing in the last century. The strange thing is, the only memory I have is seeing the Lion of Lucerne, a very sad monument for anyone who likes cats, even if this one is made of stone.
The Lion commemorates the Swiss Guards killed in 1792 when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris during the French revolution. I had never realised that the Swiss had guarded the French monarchy and so that was educational, one of the many reasons why people should travel – you do learn things, mostly about people and places, but sometimes about yourself.
The train from Munich was late to Bregenz and even later into Zurich, but I made my connection to Lucerne by about two minutes. It was jam-packed too, with luggage, as the train stopped at Zurich airport just before the main city station.
