A rail journey including two seven-minute connections at Bern and Visp. Swiss railways meant that there was no danger of missing either of those connections. Visp is a place where people seem to go to change trains.
The train from Visp to Zermatt is a great introduction to the mountain scenery of this part of the canton of the Valais, because I saw high mountains in the far distance (perhaps the Monte Rosa massif?) at the head of the valley and the sides were soon becoming steeper and rockier with many wire nets for catching stray rocks and boulders.
Indeed, at one of the valley stations there was a wide, man-made ravine under the tracks and the accompanying sign indicated that when the lights were flashing there was a danger of inundation.
In Zermatt, the Matterhorn was hiding behind a massive cloud. The place was packed and the amount of building work was quite amazing given the time of year.
