I caught an early train to the top of the Gornergrat rack railway. Again, the Matterhorn was hiding behind cloud but the views on the other side towards the Rothorn were excellent, though it was cloudy, but not raining and / or snowing as had been forecast.
At the top station, at around 3,100 metres, there is a view of the Monte Rosa massif with the large Gorner Glacier sweeping down from the horizon on the left and heading in front of the station. There are four other glaciers that are all in retreat, none of which reach the Gorner glacier.
I next caught the amazing underground funicular from Zermatt to the summit of Sunnegga where there are many trails, heading in all directions. Sunnegga is at 2,200 metres, so the engineers tunnelled through 600 metres of rock to create this amazing route, including a passing place in a large cavern. In order to walk here, and at Gornergrat, you need proper walking shoes / boots and probably walking sticks as the ground is uneven, dry, and has many loose stones, plus it’s steep!
