Travel Writing and Book Reviews

The Bernina Express runs from St Moritz to the north Italian town of Tirano. After around two-and-three-quarter hours, the Bernina bus goes from the bus station in Tirano (head down the subway under the train tracks and walk to the very end) and journeys to Lugano via the western shore of Lake Como. The bus journey ends at the main train station. The train journey takes just over two and a quarter hours and the bus about two and three quarter hours.

The highlights of the train trip are a stop at Alp Grum to photograph the Bernina massif, a semi-circular viaduct, and the amazing experience of chugging down the middle of the main street in two or three small towns with everyday life going on around you.

The highest point is 2253 metres where the train crosses the Bernina Pass just before Alp Grum.
