Vicenza has a hugely interesting old town and the map provided by the hotel indicated there’s forty buildings of significance whereas there’s actually more like eighty as all the buildings appear well preserved and when two palaces were next to each other, they both looked superb.
Andrea Palladio designed and built many buildings in this city and collectively they’re on the World Heritage List. The most famous example is on the hill overlooking the city. Palladio’s Villa Capra is called La Rotonda because it was designed as an entertainment centre from which people could enjoy the view.
Nearby, is the Villa Valmarana ai Nani housing frescoes and paintings by the father and son, Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo. In the old town, make sure not to miss the outside decoration on the Chiesa dei Carmini on Santa Croce street, just down from the imposing Porta Santa Croce, still used by careful cars.
