Travel Writing and Book Reviews

Vicenza has a beautiful old town. The centre is for pedestrians. Cyclists are outnumbered and are very careful about their progress over the cobbles.

The image accompanying this blog is the main stage of the Teatro Olimpico, dating from 1585 making it the continent of Europe’s oldest indoor theatre. It was built for the purpose and not adapted. The theatre is at the opposite end of the Corso Andrea Palladio from the Piazza del Castello and the Torrione del Castello landmark.

On Corso Andrea Palladio I found a lovely cafe called Gran Caffe (Green Bar) with a stylish interior, outside tables, and selling coffee, aperitifs, and snacks such as tuna sandwiches with onions. The tables inside are round the edge of the cafe with the seats facing inwards, so it’s a great place to read a book or do some people watching.

If you’d like a walk in a park with some statues for company, after coming out of the Teatro Olimpico turn right and head over the Ponte degli Angeli and bear left along Contra dei Torretti and left again. Straight ahead, you should see the magnificent Santa Maria In Araceli church and the Parco Querini is next door.
