Udine is the provincial capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia that borders on Slovenia and Austria.
The journey on the regional train lasted an hour and ten minutes. Udine looks run down around the train station, but heading northwards the old town appears after ten minutes in the form of the imposing cathedral. The next square is the Piazza della Liberta, the most famous part of the city, with statues, columns, loggias, and an ornate clock tower.
Up above is the castello with its museums and the Piazza Primo Maggio with views northwards over the city towards The Alps.
