There are major rail network upheavals between Udine and Cividale and people have to catch a bus instead. This takes about thirty three minutes and is efficiently done.
Cividale looks unprepossessing from the bus station, but a quick walk brought me to the Church of St Francis and the cathedral. The statue of Julius Caesar looked grey and imposing. However, the cafes were now open and full of people meeting for an early morning discussion. The sun came out and the wind dropped.
I found the Devil’s Bridge over the River Natisone with views of the major churches. The most beautiful item in the town is the 8th-Century Tempietto Longobardo, a Lombard Chapel, with a graceful stucco arch on the western wall, surrounded by six female figures.
